Field Playbook
Your quick guide. Keep the opener to about two minutes and respect their time. If it flows, keep going; if they're busy, get a name and a better time, leave a flyer, and move on.
The 2-minute opening
"Hi, I'm [your name] with The Ruff Ruck Challenge -- we're a local 501(c)(3) that raises money to train service dogs for veterans and first responders, at no cost to them. I'll keep this quick out of respect for your time. We're looking for local businesses to stand behind this year's ruck -- that can be as simple as putting a flyer in your window, all the way up to becoming a sponsor. Is there a manager who handles community support, or could I leave some info with you?"
Common objections
"No budget right now." -- "Totally understand, no ask is too small. Even putting up a flyer or sharing our page helps us reach the families who need these dogs. Can I leave one with you?"
"I'm not the decision-maker." -- "No problem -- who's the best person, and when's a good time? I'll keep it just as short for them."
"Send me an email." -- "Will do, what's the best address? I'll send the details and our flyer you can forward." (Then log it as a follow-up.)
"Where does the money go?" -- "Straight into sourcing shelter dogs and training them as service dogs for vets and first responders right here in West Michigan."
Closing -- two asks
The easy yes: display a flyer, share our page, or sign up. The bigger yes: become a sponsor or donate. Keep your QR ready so a "yes" can happen on the spot.
Field conduct
Lead with the mission, never pressure. Match their pace. Be presentable and brief. Say thank you either way. Know your graceful exit line and use it.
Daily logistics
Bring flyers, a pen, a charged phone, and water. Your area's QR code is in the app to show on your phone. Open your area, plan your route, and work it top to bottom. Mark every business you hit before you leave. Questions or a hot lead -- contact your manager.
